Great advice! During an interview, I can tell when even the best sellers are struggling through negative thoughts. That feeling in the room causes me to find out what is not being said. That is uncomfortable for everyone.

The interviewer can be guilty of the same thing when you the candidate is asking great questions about culture, management style, successes and failures within the team and company...

Better to talk it through and identify what may and may not be a fit early on, right?

    LATE BREAKING NEWS!
Here's a new investigative report idea that you can cover in between court cases and play by play sports reporting from the hockey rink at one of the nation's most prestigious universities: WIth the job market so soft, more and more people are relying on "diploma mills" to obtain "college degrees" and fancy titles from unaccredited institutions to puff up their qulaifications and resumes - a few on-line classes, a couple thousand bucks, write a paper andd you can put prestigious initials by your name. You can even make interest free monthly payments - they don't even qualify for federal student loans since they're not listed with US DEpartment of ED. One university will let you complete your masters degree with $585 down and 18 easy payments of $195. Tell that to the average grad student and watch their reaction!

Here's some great resources to get started provided by my brother who is an "Ivy League" PhD (which took him mor than 5 years and $100,000 to complete - as well as paying back Federal Student Loans for more than 15 years - plus interest to the tune of about $22,000) who happens to be in charge of regulating this very issue in New Jersey.

Journalists – whether professionals or citizens interested in covering events in their communities – must understand that they are not above any law or rules set down by authorities.

Robert Forto’s situation is a perfect example. He failed to use common sense. He broke the rules and created a very difficult situation for himself and the court. It appears he also unintentionally gave a black eye to the National Association of Citizen Journalists.

Breaking rules is not what we teach at the NACJ. In fact, the NACJ was created so that citizen journalists could be trained on how to accurately and properly report the news in their communities.

We want our citizen journalists to take their jobs seriously as they work to inform the public. We want them to do things right the first time.

In this Internet age, praise or criticism comes quickly – whether it is justified or not. People often react without any basic knowledge about the individuals or organizations involved. In this case, we hope people will take the time to learn more about the NACJ before making disparaging remarks about the association.

Bragging about being charged with comtempt of court? I hardly think that is something to be proud of. I'm not a journalist but I can surely tell that you aren't either. This article is nothing more than "it's all about me" look at me - I've got a cool card from the "mail order" house so I'm going to pick one of the biggest media spectacles in town to see if I can pretend I'm a real reporter and actually get in! This is a grate example of why these types of ID's have little or no value - you're no more than a looky loo. So at 11:09 you say - "The judge made an announcement about cellphones being prohibited and that no media devices what-so-ever are allowed to be used" and 20 minutes later you're being hauled out by cops for doing just that - AND YOU'RE PROUD OF IT!. A man died at the hands of no-good gangbangers - a family and friends are destroyed and looking for justice and you make a mockery of it - just to see if you can get in. There's no doubt in my mind that if you would have showed up at that school shooting in the other part of town the other day, they would have taken one look and sent you on your way. There's not another "cub reporter" who would have been given a murder trial as their first assignment. By the way, who was this "assignment" for? Were you reporting for some news outlet. I think it was for Robert's EgoTribune Daily - All Robert - All the Time.

Which brings me to my real point. I'm here in Denver from Kentucky training a Service Dog and someone asked me to check you out because they really question your credentials. I've listened to your pocasts and read your stuff and I wonder - are yo really a dog trainer? -it kind of looks like it butr when you page through your pages and listen to your broadcasts your all over the map - I will say that some of the people you have call in sound like real pros I'll definitely check out that airline for my clients- but then I hear a woman talking about how her dog channels messages from Al Gore about global warming and wants to be a mayor? SEriously? Do us all a favor Doctor - if you're gonna be a dog training expert, be a dog training expert and not a hodge podge of I don't know what. We have a hard enough time trying to create legitimasy. I also think this ridiculus piece sure gives your "journalism" school a black eye 'cause if this is what they teach you should ask for your money back and use the box tops for a decoder ring next time.

Thanks for giving me the platform to express my views -

I loves Seth Godin's message and challenge to think different and not be average. We have plenty of average. The marketing genius is asking people to make a choice to stand out rather than fit in. Are you up for it? Check out his book: Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? This interveiw on Mashable is a good read as well.

Great information Neil. I have found over the past year that I do need to dedicate time to "promote" the brand but I try my best to not let it interfere with other daily tasks.

    Excellent message, Neil.
Ok, in the time it took you to read this article, did you check your email, answer a Facebook message, make a Tweet, or do other activities in the Virtual World?
I did not, but point well taken. As a matter of fact, I personally feel fortunate to have remained true to a value of now. When I am with a client, everything is off. When I am on the phone, everything is off because I value the time of the person I am talking with...whether they are paying me for my time or not. I even have blocks of time where I manage my day for checking email and moderating this site and social media connecting and returning calls I have missed. It is more difficult today, but then I remember how important segmenting my focused time attributed to being a top producer in retained executive recruiting. A practice we should all learn or re-learn, to your point. Off to sharing this valuable post...

Great Brand, Willy Wonka. Still today people remember it even before the Johnny Depp version. I Think that social media is one of the primary driving forces in the business and brand world today just like Willy Wonka, if you see it enough times it is bound to stick.

Gotta love the popularity of the cross brands from Wonka including the all-girl band Veruca Salt that was popular in the late 90's.

I agree with the original blog post about Conan O'Brien not a best fit for the time slot. NBC executives should know the audience better than that. Conan will be better elsewhere. I hope his company starts a new network with old Simpsons brand of comedy.

Thanks David. I think it's important that brand owners try and quantify the value of this passion. This may come through tracking spend via loyal customers or researching purchase habits with this same segment. It means monitoring the value of a relationship vs a one-off purchase.

Of course this fits the sport, entertainment and special interest categories the best.

I love the phrase "high disposable passion". Sports and entertainment cause the same spending patterns. Many save for the high-priced tickets to follow their beloved team. Many save money to invest in the latest and greatest equipment for sport - skis, golf clubs...cars.

I heard pieces of the following statement on talk radio. I looked on NBC.com and could not easily find it (but I did notice an advertisement for the NBC broadcasting of New Years Eve - idiots. Anyway, here is Conan's statement. Bold was added for effect and to point out how much I personally respect Conan's respect for the history of the Tonight Show institution. Leno does not get that. Tow different personal brands. One is about self-promotion and himself and the other is for the integrity of the show and contracts. I still believe O'Brien may have failed too, but time did not tell. See original blog post.

    People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

    Yours,

    Conan

I'm not sure whether I disagree with you or not, David. Personally speaking, I am not a Leno or Conan viewer and most of friends aren't either. I think you are right to point out that we are on the verge of an emerging new generation of late night TV. It feels as if Leno has had his time, Conan is just getting his chance to shine and Jimmy Fallon is waiting in the wings. I also wonder whether NBC is acting too quickly by pulling Leno from that time slot and whether Leno shouldn't just bow out and take this to be his time to retire.

In other words it does not matter what the writers and producers of the shows do, the popularity and future of each show, where every they ultimately land, will be about the entertainer/show host and the behavior of the television audience.
This sums it up for me.... the choices that the viewing audience make will ultimately determine the future of each show and their relative existence. This is almost the ultimate demonstration of "brand!" There are so many other choices for entertainment in the form of comedy, skits and interviews that I consequently see the late night tv model falling apart to leave room for the new. Maybe there will be a place for these shows on the internet... or perhaps the format will have to change and the personalities will need to adapt.

In the end, I predict that Leno will wind up not accepting a new time slot and Conan will be left to carry the Tonight Show torch for as long as it still has fuel to burn. Then again, I'm not really known for my psychic abilities... my talents lie elsewhere.
