  1. Humane vs Human Resource Management

I recently saw a recruiting ad for a “Humane Resource Manager”, although this was likely a typo, it did entice me to explore the difference between Human Resource Management and the potential for Humane Resource Management.

Human Resources traditionally have been heavily focused on legislative compliance, rules, and procedures and the human element is often lost. HR has struggled to gain a seat at the executive table for decades, rather unsuccessfully. Part of the reason is HR ...
  2. Developing Personal Accountabilty

“However much we guard ourselves against it, we tend to shape ourselves in the image others have of us. It is not so much the example of others we imitate, as the reflection of ourselves in their eyes and the echo of ourselves in their words.”
Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American philosopher and author.

It is natural to evolve as we interact with those around us. Inherently, there are good and bad influences in our lives and endless motives and filters that may influence ...
  3. How do you influence people?

Influencing others is a key leadership skill and styles vary greatly with mixed results. Think back to individuals you have interacted with in the past, can you recall those styles that worked and didn’t for you or the team as a whole? Was the expected outcome achieved? Perhaps, in the short term. Would a different approach have yielded a better outcome? Many leaders are good at influencing others. The questions is: How are you influencing people and what is the impact on long term productivity ...
  4. Training vs Learning - What environment are you creating?

by on 06-14-2010 at 02:23 PM (Don't Transition, Evolve!)
Training is very different from learning. Organizations can spend significant time and money providing training to employees in the hopes they will utilize the information. Unfortunately they usually don’t, especially when the training is required rather than something employees personally find interesting and are committed to.

However, organizations that create an environment where they partner with staff to create buy-in and where employees feel they help set, or at least have ...
  5. How is your job search progressing?

by on 06-10-2010 at 09:06 AM (Don't Transition, Evolve!)
I'm currently working with several people in transition but there is one situation I felt was worth sharing. A very talented bright individual I'm coaching ran in to a situation where she worked with a third party recruiter who told her she was receiving an offer on a position she was really excited about. Two days passed and the recruiter told her the offer was extended to another candidate. Ooops!

I think most recruiters know that you never tell a candidate they are receiving ...
