Buyer: Capital One Financial Corporation, McLean, VA
Target: Chevy Chase Bank, F.S.B., Bethesda, MD
Capital One Financial, one of the top credit card issuers in the United States, has agreed to buy Chevy Chase Bank to expand its presence in the Washington, D.C., area. The deal is valued at about $520 million in cash and stock.

M&A - Human Resources & Workforce Management Software
Buyer: Salary.com, Inc., Waltham, MA
Target: Genesys Software Systems, Inc., Methuen, MA
Salary.com, a leader in on-demand compensation solutions, will acquire Genesys Software Systems, a provider of human resource services and application software. The combined company will have a suite of products that will allow it to compete in what Genesys CEO Larry Munini refers to as the "emerging new world of integrated strategic and transactional talent management."

Buyer: Research in Motion Limited, Waterloo, Canada
Target: Chalk Media Corp., Vancouver, Canada
Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. will acquire Chalk Media, a provider of mobile-media solutions. The deal is valued at $18.8 million (U.S. currency).

Buyer: Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, NJ
Target: Mentor Corporation, Santa Barbara, CA
Diversified healthcare products maker Johnson & Johnson will acquire Mentor Corp., a leading maker of breast implants, for $1.07 billion. The acquisition will allow J&J to expand in an area known as the aesthetic-medicine business.

M&A - Pharmaceuticals
Buyer: Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Aliso Viejo, CA
Target: Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, Petaluma, CA
Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, a maker of a wide range of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, will acquire Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, a developer of topical dermatology products, for $285 million. Dow recently obtained FDA approval for Acanya, an acne treatment medication.

Target: Wavecom SA, Issy-les-Moulineaux, France
Sierra Wireless, a Canadian maker of modems, will acquire Wavecom, a French maker of machine-to-machine wireless technology. The deal is valued at $276.1 million (U.S. currency).
