Buyer: The Medicines Company, Parsippany, NJ
Target: Targanta Therapeutics Corporation, Saint-Laurent, Canada
The Medicines Company, a drug developer focused on acute care medicines, will acquire Targanta, a small biotech firm in need of a cash infusion amid tight credit markets in order to get its new drug to market. Medicines will acquire Targanta for an initial $42 million, but the deal could amount to $95.5 million if Targanta's antibiotic oritavancin is approved and reaches worldwide sales of $400 million.

Buyer: Riverbed Technology, Inc., San Francisco, CA
Target: Mazu Networks, Inc., Cambridge, MA
Riverbed Technology, a provider of network solutions, has agreed to buy privately-held Mazur Networks, a maker of security software. The deal calls for an initial payment of $25 million, as well as possible additional payments based on future performance.

Autonomy Corporation, a UK-based enterprise software company, will acquire Interwoven, a San Jose, Calif., software company focused on content management solutions. The deal is valued at about $775 million.

Target: Advanced Medical Optics, Inc., Santa Ana, CA
Abbott Laboratories, a leading maker of health care products, will acquire eye-care company Advanced Medical Optics for $1.36 billion, allowing Abbott to enter the lucrative cataract- and laser-surgery markets with a strong foothold. Advanced is the top provider of equipment for Lasik laser vision-correction surgery, The Wall Street Journal reports, indicating that the company is also a big maker of contact-lens solution and cataract-surgery technology.

Buyer: Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN
Target: Ablation Frontiers, Inc., Carlsbad, CA
Medtronic, a leading maker of defibrillators and pacemakers, will aquire Ablation Frontiers, a maker of medical devices for treating atrial fibrillation. The deal, valued at $225 million, is expected to close by the end of April.
