Swiss drug giant Roche will acquire biotech leader Genentech for nearly $46 billion. Roche already owns 56 percent of Genentech, and the two companies have had a partnership for more than 18 years.

Target: Gevity HR, Inc., Bradenton, FL


TriNet Group, a provider of HR and payroll services, will acquire Gevity HR, a provider of similar services, in an all-cash transaction valued at $98 million. The move, which will change Gevity HR's status from a public to a privately held company, will allow TriNet to expand in Texas, where Gevity has a strong presence.

Target: Pure Digital Technologies, Inc., San Francisco, CA


Technology giant Cisco Systems has agreed to purchase Pure Digital Technologies, maker of the Flip Video camera, for $590 million in stock. The acquisition allows Cisco to follow through on its plans to expand into consumer electronics. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Cisco unveiled a music player that can wirelessly send tunes to any room in a house by tapping into song libraries from computers connected to the home's network.

Target: Schering-Plough Corporation, Kenilworth, NJ


Pharmaceutical giant Merck has agreed to buy rival Schering-Plough for $41.1 billion. The acquisition will give Merck biotech, consumer-health, and animal-health businesses, and allow the company to expand its presence in China, Brazil, and other emerging markets.
