Liz Ryan is a popular entrepreneur and networker in Denver and beyond. I enjoyed her article in BusinessWeek called "
Network Like an Entrepreneur" and want to share with you.
I agree with the points made of course. In my experience the people adding value and making connections during good
and bad times are those who are passionate and certainly understand the value of building connections. It is easy to find the passion in entrepreneurs, but the corporate type as a group is more likely networking during a job search - experiencing fear. In my days as an executive recruiter, I was impressed with the executive who helped us with our searched in return helping a friend who would benefit from the opportunities. Did I pay closer attention to those connectors a year later when they had a need - you bet! I speak to many groups of execs and they seem to get it until busy not needing anything again - a few connectors always rise and you can tell by the value they add to the group. When I speak to a group of entrepreneurs, there is more contribution and connecting going on - why, because they feel the pain and genuinely want to help.
Active and passive job seekers pay attention to her advice so you don't have to kick yourself every few years when you are starting over with your network during a new job search or other need. Besides, doesn't if feel good to be recognized as a trusted resource - that is a great brand!
What say you?
