In order to earn the right to be heard, there must be a know, like and trust factor. And, to have all three of those elements (know, like and trust) there must be conversation.

While someone might have stellar content and "look the part" and "smell the part" of the consummate professional - you never really know until you talk to them.

A glaring example is professional speakers. How many of you have read a book that was just the most amazing wisdom you've ever read? Then you attended a training, watched a webcast, listened in on a teleseminar or even went so far as to go to one of their workshops and you were shocked at how TERRIBLE they sounded? You might of even wondered...who wrote that book? Because, they surely do not sound like anything that they sounded like on paper, or their website or in the book.

To garner know, like and trust - we must have a chance to sample your character and competence. And, this is not shared just by listening to someone. There must be some sort of engagement and conversation - even if it's through a Twitter chat, email or Facebook wall posts.

To develop know, like and trust:
  • Be good at what you do
  • Keep on top of what's happening in your industry, company, community
  • Do what you say you're going to do
  • Listen twice as much as you speak
  • Share advice and support - online and offline
  • Engage in conversation on a regular basis (be it in person or online)
