‘Time is of the essence – time is money’. Perhaps we think this phrase to be a tad bit trite, as we have heard people say it over and over again, such that we let the words fall upon our ears passively, like hearing some insistent, broken down record in dire need of fixing. But in my experience as a wife to a retail businessman for over 20 years while being a mother to three beautiful children, the totality of my life story can be summed up into that simple belief – that time is of the essence, time is money. In fact, time is indeed more valuable than money!
Why so? Because you can do something more with your money today, such as invest it in the stock market or real estate, and reap great benefits from it tomorrow. But from the kindergarten toddler to the highly accomplished Donald Trump, we each only have exactly 86,400 seconds in any given day – no more and no less. Time can never be taken back. When the clock moves, the moment that has passed can no longer be relived.
When I am tasked to deliver a speech, or even just an inspirational message, I always emphasize on the sublime importance of time and action, because no matter how many hours I stand at the podium to impart my thoughts and beliefs, nothing will become of it if my audience receives it passively – just like hearing some broken down record. I thrive on the eagerness and willingness of my audience, the affirmative response to my call for action, because then I am assured that my time was well spent, and the efforts I have put together will gather a good harvest.
I always delight in working with small business entrepreneurs because they all have amazing dreams, and I know how difficult it is to keep a dream alive, especially when everyone else seems to be working against the dream, trying to douse and snuff out the light. But I always say that everyone has a purpose and a calling, and that nobody was brought into this world for nothing. We all have a calling. We all have a gift. And in this world, there truly are no coincidences whatsoever.
Today, i challenge you - to look at your time. When I say, look at it, I mean, look at how you spend it. No, I'm not referring to the "canned answer" that's often recited to me (and others) when asked "what's most important to you". I'm referring to where you spend your time. Look at your calendar, PDA, or Outlook and where ever you spend your time - IS what you value. No matter what you say - where you're spending time now IS what's important to you. Spending 12 hours of the day on business - then that's important to you. There's nothing wrong with that IF that is really what's important to you.
As we wind down 2009, and if your serious about developing a personal brand that is "authentically you" and harnessing the power of your own personal strengths - then take the time to find out what's REALLY important to you - not what you SAY is important - what you DO that's given time and therefore elevated to the rank of "most important."
